Resumen

Lévinas and Derrida, in France, were both interpreters and heirs of the phenomenological tradition; yet they developed their philosophical projects in constant dialogue with, and often through explicit reference to, their Jewish faith. A thinker from the analytic tradition, Hilary Putnam – who shared with Lévinas and Derrida the same religious background – engaged with their works on several occasions, acknowledging their strengths while also formulating critical objections. In doing so, he offered an analytic reinterpretation of some of the central questions addressed by the two French philosophers. This paper examines the main stages of Putnam’s engagement, with particular attention to the common points and divergences in their approaches to religious experience and, above all, to the moral dimension and the values that sustain it.
